🧬 Cannabigerol (CBG) and Scientifically Documented Properties

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a natural phytocannabinoid derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. It is the precursor (“parent cannabinoid”) to compounds like CBD and THC, but CBG itself is non-psychoactive (non-intoxicating), making it safe for daily use (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). CBG interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates many key physiological functions – including mood, pain perception, sleep, immune and inflammatory responses (health.harvard.edu)– to help maintain balance.

📌 Key Properties Identified in Scientific Literature:

  • Anxiety and stress relief: Preclinical research indicates CBG has anxiolytic effects, potentially by interacting with serotonin (5-HT₁ₐ) and adrenergic receptors to reduce anxiety (cannamd.com). In a recent human trial, a single 20 mg dose of CBG significantly lowered measured anxiety and stress levels without any intoxicating effects (nature.com). Early evidence includes studies of CBG in models of social stress and surveys of users reporting reduced anxiety and PTSD symptoms.

  • Sleep support: While research on CBG and sleep is still emerging, it may improve sleep quality and duration, especially when sleep disturbances are related to anxiety or pain. In a 2022 survey of CBG users, 31% reported using CBG for insomnia, with the majority rating it more effective than conventional sleep medications (nature.com). Many users noted falling asleep faster and deeper sleep when using CBG, suggesting a potential role in addressing stress-related sleep issues.

  • Anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties: CBG influences multiple targets (CB₁, CB₂ cannabinoid receptors as well as TRP channels and adrenergic receptors) involved in pain signaling and inflammation (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). Preclinical studies have shown analgesic effects of CBG in models of chronic and neuropathic pain, and anti-inflammatory activity in conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (nature.com). For example, CBG reduced inflammatory markers and nitric oxide in a mouse colitis study, leading to less intestinal inflammation (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). These findings support CBG’s potential to help relieve persistent pain and reduce inflammation.

  • Physiological balance (homeostasis): By modulating the ECS, CBG may support general well-being and internal balance. CBG is known to be a partial agonist at ECS receptors and even helps regulate endocannabinoid signaling (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). This means it can tone the activity of various neurotransmitters and immune mediators to maintain homeostasis. Many cannabinoids exhibit adaptogenic-like effects in the body, and CBG’s broad receptor interactions suggest it similarly contributes to equilibrium in bodily systems (mood, immunity, appetite, etc.).

  • Antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects: Experimental data suggest CBG has notable antioxidant capacity and can modulate immune responses. In cell studies, CBG significantly reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels – performing better than vitamin C as an antioxidant – and inhibited the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (like IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α) under stress conditions (researchgate.net). These immunomodulatory effects include boosting anti-inflammatory interleukins while dampening excessive inflammatory signals (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). Such findings align with other research showing CBG’s neuroprotective and immune-calming effects, indicating it may help protect cells from oxidative stress and overactive immune reactions.

🦷 CBG in Oral Care Applications

Recent in vitro studies have started evaluating CBG for topical use in the oral cavity due to its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties (frontiersin.org):

  • Antibacterial action: CBG shows antimicrobial activity against common oral pathogens, such as Streptococcus mutans (a primary bacterium involved in dental caries) (frontiersin.org). Laboratory tests demonstrate that CBG can halt the growth of S. mutans and disrupt its bacterial membrane, indicating potential to combat dental plaque and cavities. This broad antibacterial effect likely extends to other oral bacteria that contribute to gum disease and bad breath (similar cannabinoids have shown effectiveness against Porphyromonas gingivalis and others) (frontiersin.org).

  • Comparable to chlorhexidine, without staining: In preliminary comparisons, cannabinoids like CBG have demonstrated plaque-fighting effects comparable or superior to chlorhexidine (a standard medicated mouthwash), without the drawbacks. Notably, long-term chlorhexidine use is known to cause tooth staining as a side effect, whereas CBG-based formulations would not cause such discoloration. This suggests CBG could offer a natural alternative for oral antisepsis that avoids the brownish staining and taste alteration associated with chlorhexidine rinses.

  • Well tolerated by oral tissues: CBG is well tolerated by oral mucosal tissues, with no signs of irritation, burning sensation, or tissue damage observed in tests (researchgate.net). In fact, CBG’s soothing and anti-inflammatory properties may help calm gum irritation. Studies on topical CBG (in skin applications) found it to be a safe, non-irritating ingredient (researchgate.net), and by extension, a CBG oral product is expected to be gentle on the gums and oral epithelium. Users of CBG oral oils have not reported issues like oral burning or mouth dryness beyond mild, transient effects.

  • Formulation stability: CBG can be effectively stabilized in carrier oils (such as medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) coconut oil or olive oil) which also enhance its delivery in oral formulations. Formulating CBG in lipid-based carriers protects the cannabinoid from degradation and improves its absorption into oral tissues. This product utilizes such carrier oils to ensure that CBG remains potent and bioavailable when applied in the mouth. The oil base also helps the CBG distribute evenly across oral surfaces for maximum benefit.

Note: This CBG product has been formulated for topical use, in accordance with current European legislation on non-psychoactive industrial hemp products (THC < 0.2%)¹⁰. It is registered in the European CPNP database with Notification Number: CPNP 4680815.

The information presented is based on published scientific literature regarding cannabigerol (CBG) as a compound and is not intended as a health claim for the final product. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
